The annual Ed Roberts Caring Hearts Fund cancer survivor dinner is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, as the event nears the 30-year threshold.
Cancer survivors and their special guests are invited to the event at Maplewood Baptist Church, sponsored by the Paris-Henry County Healthcare Foundation.
This event was established by the late Ed Roberts in the basement of the Henry County Medical Center Cancer Center in 1989 with only 20 guests and a small budget. After his death, his widow Barbara took over leadership on the event and kept it going for more than 20 years.
The Caring Hearts Fund and Cancer Care Center took over the event within the last couple of years, but now Barbara Roberts is involved again to help ensure the dinner is a big success.
“No one knows more than Barbara Roberts how much this meal means to every survivor,” said Tory Daughrity, director of marketing and public relations at HCMC. “For some, it is the only time they get to dress up and go out to eat. For others, it may be the only gift they receive for Christmas. We are looking forward to a great meal at a new location with new energy.”
A traditional turkey and dressing meal will be served along with entertainment by Keith Longbotham.
