One of the most exciting parts of the local middle school basketball scene each year is the River Conference Tournament which is set to begin Saturday at Gamlin Gymnasium.
First-round action begins at 10 a.m. with No. 4 seed Lakewood (4-6 in the conference) taking on No. 5 Harrelson (2-8) in a girls’ contest. At 11:15 a.m., a boys’ match up pits No. 4 Houston County (5-5) against No. 5 Lakewood (2-8).
The 12:30 p.m. girls’ quarterfinal contest has No. 3 Houston County (7-3) battling No. 6 Henry (0-10), while at 1:45 p.m., boys’ No. 3 Camden (6-4) takes on No. 6 Henry (0-10).
The girls’ top seed is Stewart County (9-1). The Lady Rebels have a bye into the semifinals where they will meet the Lakewood-Harrelson winner at 5 p.m. Monday. Camden (8-2) is the girls’ No. 2 seed with the Lady Lions meeting the Houston County-Henry winner at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals.
In the boys’ tournament, Stewart County (10-0) is the top seed and will play the Houston County-Lakewood winner at 6:15 p.m. Monday. Harrelson (7-3) is the boys’ No. 2 seed and will battle the Camden-Henry winner at 8:45 p.m. Monday in the semifinals.
The girls’ championship game is set for 6 p.m. Thursday with the boys’ title game to follow. After the boys’ championship game, the All-River Conference teams, the All-Tournament teams and the All-Conference cheerleaders will be announced.
