Wendy Wratten said her new business, Market Street Bakery, due to open Friday afternoon, has always been a dream.
“I started off when I was younger in my grandmother’s kitchen. It was always the dream to own a bakery,” she said.
She worked hard to make that dream come true.
Wratten attended Sullivan University in Louisville, Ky., where she studied to become a pastry chef.
It was in Louisville that she met her husband, Kirk Wratten, who is helping her renovate the former A La Mode Sweet Shoppe at 112 N. Market St.
Wratten operated A La Mode all four years and eventually bought the business to transform into her new vision. She said Market Street Bakery will no longer be a cupcake and ice cream shop, but instead a full service bakery.
The bakery will offer cakes of all kinds, for any special occasion. Wratten is prepared for everything from kids’ birthday cakes to pretty wedding cakes.
Wratten plans on making cakes to order, but she will also keep some in a pastry display case, ready to be sold.
Other sweet treats at the bakery will include hand-decorated cookies, brownies and baklava.
She said she hopes the business will be a nice place for locals to come eat lunch, too. The bakery will offer soups and sandwiches at lunch time.
Wratten said she’s thrilled to be able to realize her dream, and to show her children that dreams are achievable.
Market Street Bakery is due to open Friday afternoon, with a ribbon cutting scheduled for 4 p.m. The phone number is 641-1222.
