Ryan Cross, a practical nursing student at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Paris, was named local winner of the Tennessee Board of Regents’ statewide Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) program.

Cross, the daughter of Christi Cross of Paris, is a lifelong resident of Henry County. She is scheduled to graduate in December and plans to work as a licensed practical nurse while pursuing her degree as a registered nurse.

She competed with other Paris students for the campus title. She was nominated by her instructor, GeNan Pendergrass, and will move on to regional competition in November. She will compete with representatives from eight other TCATs in West Tennessee for the regional award. Three finalists from the regional competitions will move on to compete for the state title in March.

The winner of the state title, which is awarded for excellence in leadership and ability, will serve as the spokesman for technical education in the state of Tennessee.

“The purpose of the SOAR program is to spotlight the importance of technical education in today’s world of work and to recognize outstanding achievement by students attending colleges of applied technology,” explained Brad White, president of TCAT-Paris.
