A Springville man has stepped up to help homeless veterans in Henry County.
He has created a place for them to stay, so they do not have to be homeless anymore.
Jim Napier has an RV park at 265 Rice Lane in Springville where veterans can live in their campers or in cabins. It is called Almost Home.
Sixty-eight veterans have already contacted Napier, saying they need a home. Napier’s goal is to have a total of 25 cabins on the property. There are three cabins underway, there are six veterans living in campers right now.
There is a laundry room and bath house for the veterans to keep themselves clean.
There is a kitchen inside and he is working on a kitchen outside so they can grill.
Napier is constructing a workhouse for the veterans so they can do activities such as painting, pottery or gardening to make money for the monthly rent.
“I did this because people need help … so they can get back on their feet. I want to show them they have someone who truly cares,” said Napier. “If you have any heart at all you’ll do what you can to change someone’s life.”
Almost Home will have events such as movie and music night and a cookout night during which the veterans can interact with each other and have fun.
The veterans living in their campers pay $299 a month and pay for electricity. The veterans living in the cabins pay $599 a month for everything, except food.
Napier was inspired by a place in Austin, Texas, called Village of Hope. It is a place for the homeless in Texas to stay with the same features.
“This had to be done in our community, because there are so many homeless veterans,” he said.
Napier needs volunteers for work and donations of food, furniture and time from the community to make this happen.
Almost Home will be hosting an all-you-can-eat barbecue and concert Sunday.
There will be performances by Mad Women and many more.
The gates will open at 11 a.m. Tickets will be available at the gate for $20 and $25.
You can also get the tickets in advance at these locations: AMVETS Post 45, Henry County Golf Carts, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Shears The Salon.
