Tim Wirgau

No, the boxing glove strategically located between Henry County mayoral candidates Tim Wirgau (left) and John Penn Ridgeway wasn’t needed Tuesday night. Wirgau and Ridgeway appeared at a debate at Perrylodgic Brewing Co., as they are two of the three contenders for the post in the Nov. 3 election. The third candidate, Carlton Gerrell, has been hospitalized with COVID-19.

It seems apparent now that Henry County Mayor Brent Greer won’t be leaving office on Nov. 3 as he had originally planned.

Greer said Tuesday that it looks like he’ll be sticking around for at least a couple of more weeks after that.

He announced in July that he was retiring from the position he has held since 1998. His term still has two years left on it, but he had expected to step down after his replacement was elected during the first week of November.

Now, Greer says it appears it will take the county Election Commission at least a couple of weeks to certify the results of that election, meaning the new mayor couldn’t be sworn in until mid-November.

Tim Wirgau, John Penn Ridgeway and Carlton Gerrell are all candidates for the mayor’s seat.

Greer said he now expects to be staying on the job at least through the November meeting of the Henry County Commission, which is set for Nov. 16.

Wirgau and Ridgeway both attended a debate Tuesday night at the Perrylodgic Brewing Co. Gerrell didn’t attend, as he has been hospitalized with the coronavirus, according to his campaign social media page.
