An unidentified man died early Saturday at Henry County Medical Center from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an accidental shooting in Benton County.
According to Paris Police Capt. Ricky Watson, the incident took place sometime before 6 a.m., when the man accidently shot a female victim.
The man accompanied the female to the hospital, along with a third person. The female shooting victim was admitted to the hospital’s emergency department.
According to hospital spokesman Tory Daughrity, the patient was treated and was in stable condition after the incident.
The man then went missing for a time, and was subsequently located near the hospital’s Emergency Medical Services building with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“We have no indication that it was anything other than an accidental shooting and suicide at this point,” Watson said.
Names of those involved were not being released as of Sunday afternoon.
In a statement Saturday, hospital officials said the suicide was a single-person incident, and there were no injuries to staff members.
“We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of this individual,” said HCMC CEO Lisa Casteel. “We are thankful and grateful to the Paris Police Department for their commitment to this community and especially to our organization.”
Watson urged anyone handling handguns or firearms to always treat any weapon as if it were loaded.
