Truck wreck

The smoldering wreckage of a Ford pickup truck lies next to a tree on East Antioch Road in the Russwood area after being extinguished by the Paris Landing Volunteer Fire Department.

A Paris man was being treated this morning at a Nashville hospital after his pickup truck hit a tree and caught fire Tuesday afternoon in the Russwood area.

Ken Steele, age unknown, of Paris was airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center after the wreck on East Antioch Road. He was undergoing surgery at presstime.

Chief Reggie Coles of the Paris Landing Volunteer Fire Department stated firefighters were dispatched to 4480 E. Antioch Road near Russwood Baptist Church at 4 p.m. after getting a report of a truck on fire with occupants possibly in the vehicle.

On their arrival, firefighters found a Ford pickup truck engulfed in flames, and a man lying nearby.

Coles stated the truck apparently had left the roadway and hit a large tree behind the church. Steele, the pickup’s driver, had managed to get out of the vehicle, and was lying beside the truck.

Firefighters and bystanders were able to move him a safe distance away from the burning truck, where he was treated by Henry County Emergency Medical Service workers.

An air ambulance helicopter landed at the scene, and Steele was airlifted to Vanderbilt.

One truck and three firefighters extinguished the truck, and were on the scene about one hour, Coles stated.
