The Henry County Highway Commission opened bids Monday afternoon on materials for the 2019-20 fiscal year.

As they did last year, commissioners awarded pipe bids to two companies.

Aluminized pipe will be bought from G&C Supply Company of Atwood, while galvanized and plastic pipe will be bought from Dixie Culvert Company in Camden.

The bid from Marathon Petroleum Co. of Kuttawa, Ky. for liquid asphalt was accepted depending on availability. County Road Supervisor Richie Chilcutt said last year Marathon shut down earlier than expected so a bid from Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions, Inc. of Parsons was accepted to be used as needed.

There were no bids received for treated lumber but Chilcutt said the highway department uses so little, it’s better to buy it from Paris Building Supply on an as needed basis.

Both bids were accepted on various grades of gravel and riprap. Most gravel will be bought from Vulcan Materials Co. in Holladay and riprap from Vulcan’s Parsons location.

A couple of grades may also be bought from the Rogers Company in Hopkinsville, Ky.

The only bid received for red gravel and sand was from J.R. Hayes Construction of Paris. It was accepted.

Delta Contracting of Humboldt won the bid for four grades of asphalt to be picked up by highway department trucks at the company’s Paris plant.

The only bid for mowing was from H&H Farms of Greenfield, to mow about 150 miles of county road rights of way at least five times during the year.

No bid was received for pavement marking this year.

Three budget items were approved, including end-of-year litter grant transfers totaling almost $1,800, about a $15,500 decrease in gasoline to a like amount increase for diesel fuel, and $6,050 from plant operations equipment to motor vehicles and highway equipment to replace a mosquito spray vehicle.

An almost $640,000 item for a bridge replacement was also approved. The replacement of the bridge on Red Top Hill Road north of Buchanan is part of the state’s high-priority bridge replacement program, and should be completed before the end of the month.
