A stretch of highway between Big Sandy and Paris will officially be renamed for Sonny Melton on Friday.
According to state Sen. John Stevens, R-Huntingdon, Highway 69A will be renamed the Sonny Melton Memorial Highway during a 2 p.m. ceremony at J.B.’s Express Mart, located at the intersection with the Highway 218 Bypass.
The portion of the highway that will be named for Melton will go from the Highway 218 Bypass to Big Sandy.
The Henry County Commission unanimously approved the dedication of the highway in October of 2017.
Melton was killed during the Oct. 1, 2017, shootings in Las Vegas.
Melton was one of 50 people killed during the mass shooting, which occurred during the Route 91 Harvest Festival, an annual country music festival.
The resolution approved by the Henry County Commission said Melton, a Big Sandy resident, showed incredible bravery and selflessness during the shooting, sacrificing his life to save his wife, local orthopedic surgeon Heather Gulish Melton.
Sonny Melton, who was a registered nurse at Henry County Medical Center, will be the namesake for the road, which connects Big Sandy and Paris.A statement released by the commission shortly after the vote was completed said the stretch of highway was fitting for him, as his death brought the two communities together in grief.
