After a long search, Henry County Medical Center has found its cardiologist.
The hospital’s board of trustees learned Thursday that Wayne Gibson has accepted an offer to practice fulltime at the hospital.
The joint announcement was made at the start of the board’s monthly meeting by Lisa Casteel, HCMC CEO, and April Hackney of St. Thomas Heart Group.
Dr. Gibson will be joining the hospital Dec. 1.
“This has been a long time coming,” Casteel said. “We’re so excited.”
The hospital, in cooperation with St. Thomas, has been advertising for a fulltime cardiologist since mid-2018.
Gibson, who is originally from Louisville, Ky., visited the hospital 3-4 weeks ago, Casteel said. He also fielded offers from hospitals in California and Michigan. He is currently living in Colorado Springs, Colo.
His wife, Stephanie Mayfield Gibson, is a former commissioner of health for the commonwealth of Kentucky.
“He’s really excited to come to Paris,” Casteel said.
In a related item, Casteel said they had reached an agreement for a new OB-GYN.
Sandra Boxell of Jackson will be joining the hospital Dec. 1.
In a separate item, the board learned the hospital was embarking on a program with the Henry County Sheriff’s Department to train certain hospital personnel as reserve deputies.
The board learned about its program from Dale Guffey, chief financial officer, who said he was attending a training session later that night.
Casteel said the board would receive additional details at a future meeting.
