A Paris man was arrested on child abuse charges Wednesday night on Cherry Street.
Don Somerville, 73, of 320 Cherry St. was arrested at 8:56 p.m. by Paris Police Patrolman Daniel Andres after hitting a 12-year-old girl.
According to a report by Andres, police were dispatched to the address after a domestic violence report.
Andres spoke to Somerville, who told him he and the child were fighting about a laundry basket and she hit him in the back of the head, at which point he hit her back.
The child told Andres that Somerville grabbed the laundry basket and attempted to get it away from her, and a woman at the address was trying to hold him back and get him to leave her alone.
She said Somerville broke free and hit the girl with an open hand in her right eye, knocking her to the ground.
Andres said the child had a bruise under her right eye and dirt on her back.
Somerville was arrested on one count of domestic assault and one count of child abuse.
He was scheduled to appear Thursday in Henry County General Sessions Court. No bond information was available.
