A tractor-trailer crash Wednesday morning involving construction explosives closed Highway 641 south of Murray near the Midway community for most of the day, according to The Murray Ledger & Times.

Photos taken by the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office show the semi truck on its side near several electric transformers.

Calloway County Sheriff Sam Steger is urging everyone to avoid the area until experts can arrive and clear the scene later in the day.

He advised motorists to use Midway, Crossland or State Line Road as detours.

According to Keith Todd, spokesman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the truck was hauling 34,212 pound of blasting agent explosive.

The cast booster/charge explosive was manufactured by Accurate Energetic Systems of McEwen.

As of 10:15 a.m., power had been cut to the electrical poles and transformers, and power to portions of Hazel.

Steger said Wednesday morning he anticated it would be at least two hours before crews arrived to begin offloading the cargo and it would be several hours after that for the rig to be removed.

The road reopened to traffic at 3:20 p.m.
