The Atkins-Porter Dog Park will be the home of a Halloween dog party and costume contest beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The event, dubbed Howl-A-Ween at the Dog Park, is scheduled to last until dark, and will include games and fun for attendees and their furry friends.
The costume contest will begin at 5:30 p.m., with judging beginning at 5:45 p.m.
Event organizer Jodie Haywood advised that owners arrive with dogs out of costume, so they can burn energy first without the worries of costume hazards.
Games will be available for both dogs and their owners, including “tricks for treats” and apple bobbing.
Haywood said she and her teenage daughter came up with the idea one night after visiting the dog park.
“Two days later, we had the park’s approval and a flyer ready,” she said.
She said she’s fairly new to Paris, and wasn’t able to meet many people until she began visiting the dog park.
Haywood said she was able to organize the event with other residents and dog park regulars within a short window.
“We realize it’s short notice,” she said, “But we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from the community.”
Haywood said she hoped to continue the event next year, depending on the response Thursday.
“We hope to make this a Saturday afternoon event next year, with more activities and features,” she said.
