U.S. Army veteran Grady Nolen Neal, 87, of Buchanan died Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at his home.
His funeral service was Saturday afternoon at Ridgeway Funeral Home, with Chad Kennedy officiating.
Pallbearers were Mark Kiefer Jr., Joey Charles, Taylor Miranda-Thompson, Sydney Miranda and Lucas and Samuel Palmer. Honorary pallbearers were Lexi Miranda and Peyton Charles.
Burial with military honors was in Memorial Cemetery.
Neal was born June 8, 1932, in Huntsville, Ala. He was the son of the late Nolen Alexander Neal and Effie Lula Reed.
He was married Dec. 3, 1950, to Doris Evelyn Neal, who preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 2017.
He is survived by four children: Lois (Robert) Palmer of Buchanan, Debbie (Harold) Charles of Buchanan, Patsy (Mark) Kiefer of Chicago and Vicki (Walter) Miranda of Wauconda, Ill.; eight grandchildren: Mark Kiefer Jr., Kristin Murphy, Joey Charles, Taylor Miranda-Thompson, Sydney and Lexi Miranda, and Lucas and Samuel Palmer; five great-grandchildren: Peyton Charles, Virgil Palmer, Nora Maeve Murphy, and Stephen and Owen Kiefer; a sister, Diane (Ralph) Thomas of Florida; and a special niece, Geila Plucinski of Des Plaines, Ill.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by three sisters: Stella Russell, Edith Mullins and Alyce Swaim; and a brother, Gene Paul Neal.
Neal was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War. He worked for 35 years as a printer at Northwestern Printing Company in Chicago. He enjoyed Chicago sports, dancing with his wife and caring for his pets.
A family member said he loved going to the horse races, coin collecting, recycling and everything Elvis. He enjoyed watching Westerns, “The Simpsons,” and “The Big Bang Theory” on television.
