Former Henry Countian Alex E. Cantrell, 75, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

A private graveside service is planned Wednesday at Sikeston (Mo.) Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Watts will officiate. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge.

Born Feb. 25, 1934, in Leoma, he was a son of A.J. and Lura Messer Cantrell, now both deceased. They were known as MeMaw and Papaw.

He was married to Olline Cain Cantrell, who died Aug. 28, 1992.

Cantrell owned and operated Alex E. Cantrell Insurance Agency and was a farmer for many years.  He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau. He retired at age 50 and moved to Clearwater, Fla.

He leaves one daughter: Cindy (Jay) Knudtson of Cape Girardeau; two sons: David and Derek Cantrell, both of Cape Girardeau; one brother: Eric (Sami) Cantrell of Crossville; three sisters: Faythe (Larry) Shore of Maryville and Norma (Andy) Munns and Jeannie (Jim) Woodring, both of Crossville; two grandchildren: Demi Cantrell and Gunnar Knudtson; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

He also was preceded in death by two sisters: Roberta Pitchford, who lived in Scottsville, Ky., and Jimmie May Menzel, who lived in Albany, Ore.
