NASHVILLE (AP) — Tevin Brown had 28 points as Murray State beat Tennessee State 73-65 on Saturday night.

KJ Williams had 13 points and eight rebounds for Murray State (18-6, 11-1 Ohio Valley Conference). Devin Gilmore added eight rebounds.

The victory gave the Racers sole possession of first place in the OVC race after Austin Peay (10-2) lost to Belmont on Saturday. Murray State takes on Austin Peay on the road on Thursday. It will the first meeting this season between the Racers and Governors with the game being showon ESPNU with an 8 p.m. tip off.

Jy’lan Washington scored a career-high 24 points and had 12 rebounds for the Tigers (15-10, 7-5). Michael Littlejohn added 13 points. Wesley Harris had 10 points.

The Racers improve to 2-0 against the Tigers for the season. Murray State defeated Tennessee State 76-64 on Jan. 25. Tennessee State plays Belmont on the road on Thursday.

 

BRUINS 71, GOVS 63

Adam Kunkel scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half and Belmont beat Austin Peay 71-63 on Saturday night in Nashville.

Caleb Hollander added 14 points and made three 3-pointers as did Grayson Murphy who scored 12 points. Tyler Scanlon scored 10 points for Belmont (18-7, 9-3 Ohio Valley Conference), which made 18 of 24 free throws to 7 of 12 for the Governors (16-9, 10-2).

Belmont won its fourth straight game and improved to 10-1 at home. Austin Peay has lost two straight after a 10-game winning streak.

Terry Taylor, who came in as the nation’s eighth-leading scorer at 22.2 points per game, finished with 26 points and a career-high 23 rebounds for the Governors. Antwuan Butler made three from the arc and finished with 11 points.

The teams split their season series with Austin Peay winning 86-78 on Jan. 25.

The Governors tied the game at 32 with the first basket of the second half. Kunkel then hit a 3-pointer and a layup and the Bruins led the rest of the way, leading by 10 with 2:37 to go. Austin Peay didn’t get closer than five thereafter.

 

GAMECOCKS 75, SKYHAWKS 61

De’Torrion Ware had 22 points as Jacksonville State defeated UT Martin 75-61 on Saturday. Kayne Henry added 20 points for the Gamecocks. Henry also had nine rebounds.

Derrick Cook had six assists for Jacksonville State (10-15, 5-7 Ohio Valley Conference).

UT Martin scored 20 points in the first half, a season low for the team.

Parker Stewart had 16 points and seven assists for the Skyhawks (7-16, 3-9). Miles Thomas added 13 points and eight rebounds. Derek Hawthorne, Jr. had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Jacksonville State matches up against Tennessee Tech on the road on Thursday. UT Martin matches up against Southeast Missouri State on the road on Thursday.
